How to Solve Sudoku
A Beginner’s Guide
Sudoku is a logic puzzle that uses numbers instead of math. You do not need to add, subtract, or calculate anything — you only need careful thinking and observation.
The Goal
Fill in the empty squares so that:
Every row contains the numbers 1 through 9 once each
Every column contains the numbers 1 through 9 once each
Every 3 × 3 box contains the numbers 1 through 9 once each
No number can repeat within a row, column, or box.
Understanding the Grid
A Sudoku puzzle has:
9 rows (left to right)
9 columns (top to bottom)
9 smaller boxes made up of 3 × 3 squares
Some numbers are already filled in. These are your clues.
Your job is to complete the rest using logic.
Step 1: Look for Easy Wins
Start by scanning the puzzle.
Ask yourself:
Which rows already have many numbers?
Which columns are nearly complete?
Which boxes are missing only a few numbers?
The more numbers already placed, the easier it is to find the missing one.
Step 2: Find Missing Numbers
Choose one empty square and check:
Row — Which numbers are already used?
Column — Which numbers appear here?
Box — Which numbers are inside the 3 × 3 section?
The correct number must be the one not already used in any of those three places.
Step 3: Use the Process of Elimination
Example:
If a square’s row already has:
1, 3, 5, 7, and 9
and its column contains:
2 and 6
then the only possible numbers left are:
4 or 8.
Keep checking nearby squares until only one number fits.
Step 4: Work Slowly Around the Puzzle
Sudoku is like solving a chain of small clues:
Filling one square helps solve another.
Each correct number makes the puzzle easier.
Move around the grid instead of getting stuck in one spot.
Step 5: Pencil Marks (Optional but Helpful)
Many players lightly write possible numbers in empty squares.
As you discover new numbers, erase possibilities that no longer work until only one remains.
